The Valley

Fassa Valley lies in the heart of Dolomites and exstend from Moena (1184m), in the southern part, untill Fedaia Pass (2057m). On the northern boundary are Sella Pass (2244m), linked to Gardena Valley, Pordoi Pass (2239m), linked to Livinallongo and Fedaia Pass (2057m), linked to Cordevole Valley. On the western side, the Costalunga Pass (1745m) is linked with Ega Valley and Bolzano, while on the eastern boundary with Falcade Valley lies the S. Pellegrino Pass (1907m).

THE STREAMS

Avisio river crosses the whole valley from north to south; it rises in the glacier of Marmolada and, along its way, it receives the water of many tributaries (Rio Duron, Rio Antermont, Rio S. Nicolò etc), coming from the many side valleys.

THE SIDE VALLEYS

A lot of side valleys are linked to Fassa Valley: S. Pellegrino Valley, starting in Moena and ending on the homonimous pass (1919m); this valley, whose boundary is composed by Monzoni Group in the northern side and Alpe Lusia and Col Margherita in the southern side, can offer a wonderful sight with its grasses and woods. Monzoni Valley, starting in Pozza di Fassa, stretches in direction South on through the slopes around the homonymous Group until Selle Pass (2529m); in the central part it's reach on pasturages (especially cows); in the lower part of the valley, crossed by the Rio Monzoni, you can find a forest whose main characteristic is the high humidity rate. From Monzoni Valley leaves S. Nicolò Valley: in the lower part it is coverd by a forest but, after the waterfalls of the Rio S. Nicolò, it climbs up steep until S. Nicolò Pass (2340m).  Another valley starting from Pozza di Fassa is Jumela Valley, a steep canyon on the northern side of the Buffaure (1050m) that reaches the Sella Brunech (2428m). West to Pera di Fassa stretches the Gardeccia Valley, where a carriage road can lead you in the middle of the Group of Catinaccio; the valley ends with the huge walls of the Catinaccio and its passes (Vaiolon, Mugon, Coronelle, Principe) that connect Fassa Valley with the area of Bolzano. West to Mazzin lie two valleys that climb up the slopes of the Catinaccio: the Udai Valley and the Dona Valley; east to the village you can find the savage Grepa Valley, whose grasses stretch until Ciampac Valley. From Campitello stretches the wonderful Duron Valley where, until Duron Pass (2150m) near teh Alpe di Siusi, wonderful sights on the Marmolada alternate with a magic landscape on the higher Fassa Valley and on pastures of the same Duron Valley. finally, in the north-eastern part of Fassa Valley, stretches in direction South the Contrin Valley, on the western side of the Gran Vernel (3210m) until S. Nicolò Pass (2340m), Cirelle Pass (2683m) and Ombretta Pass (1704m).

In winter, for example, the difference between the temperature of Canazei (in the northern and shady part) and Moena (in the southern and sunny part) ca be around 10°C, in spite of the little difference in high (200 meters). The average temperature in winter goes from 0°C to -10°C during the day and from -10°C and -20°C during the night; in summer the temperature goes from 15°C to 25°C during the day and from 10°C to 15°C during the night.
