Canazei
is the most northern village of the valley and
also one of the biggest and most "urbanized" ones. It is at the foot
of the Sella Group (m. 3152), in a shadowy position, with temperatures a bit
inferior than the rest of the valley. In Canazei you can found a lot of services,
such as bank, post office, cinema, sports ground, children ground, chemist and
doctor. In this village there are three churches: the parish church,
modern and not very interesting; the church called "Madonna della
neve", very nice and richly decorated, and the little church near Passo
Sella's way, on whose wall is kept
an unexploded bomb, of the first world war.
In Canazei you can also found a modern cableway that leads first to the
little village of Pecol (1926 meters) and then in the wonderful Belvedere's
Valley.
HAMLETS:
Gries
1440 mt
Gries is nowadays the western
part of Canazei, from Hotel Caminetto to the Rio Antermont, near the
shopping center. The name of this hamlet is the same of the one of the popular
quarter o
f
Bolzano and it comes from the german word for "flour", that maybe was produced
in this area. Gries is crossed by the Rio Soracrepa and stretches in a
wide grass. As a legend tells, Gries was destroyed centuries ago by a big
landslide and only a house survuved to this tragedy, the so called "strong
house". In 1912 Gries was hit by a terrible fired. Nowadays this hamlet offers a
lot of services, hotels and the nice church of the "Madonna della Neve". built
in 1570, destroyed by a fire in 1860 and finally restored; the fresco of St.
Christopher by Giovanni Caudaner dates the XVIII century. The inhabitants of
Gries are named "Botaces", that is cooper, because in this are people used
to build probably wide containers to preserve the sauerkrauts.
Alba
1517mt
Alba is a little hamlet placed after Canazei on the street that lead to Fedaia Pass. The name of this hamlet probably comes from a building in the higher part of the village calles "sot l'èlbes". It lies in a very quiet position, and it is also well served: you can found a very nice church, a big Ice Stadium, (one of the biggest of this area and seat of Hockey Fassa Team), a bank, a post office and a wonderful promenade along the Avisio, with possibility of fishing. There are also a lot of Hotels. In Alba there is a cableway that leads in Ciampac Valley, very crowded in summer but mainly in winter. The nickname of the inhabitants is "Roc", a word coming from the strings used in the past to bind the edges together.
Penìa
1555mt
Penia is the last village of the Valley, before that the street begins to go up to
Fedaia Pass and the Marmolada. The
name
comes probably from the latin word "pendivus", that is "steep wall of the
mountains"; tha ladin name is raleted with the popular saying "Penia che
più ite no l'é nia" (Beyond Penia there's nothing else). It is located on a little hill and it has got
the shape of a tipical mountain village: the church at the top of the hill and
the houses all around. It is very small, and so it can't offer a lot of services,
even if you can found some Hotels or Residences. Around the little vilage are
also smaller hamlets, such as Lorenz and Varra, that today are deserted. The
inhabitants of Penia are named "beles", the ladin word for hernia; the farmers
of this area used to from this problem.
Pecol
1926mt
Pecol is a little village on the route that lead to Pordoi Pass. You can arrive here both with this street but also with the modern cableway of Canazei (very comfortable mainly in winter). At Pecol there is also the Cableway of Col dei Rossi, over the wonderful Belvedere Valley. There are few houses and a Hotel.
Sella Pass
2244mt
Sella Pass is the only connection between Fassa Valley and Gardena Valley; near the Pass, you can find some refuges (Valentini, Sella Pass etc.), that sometimes are also big Hotels. Around 1 km beyond the Pass, starts the yellow cableway of Sassolungo; during the winter, there are also a lot of skilifts and mainly chair lifts, going up to Col Rodella.
Pordoi Pass
2239mt
Pordoi Pass is the linking pass between Fassa Valley and the Livinallongo.; on the route to the Pass and also on the pass you can find some hotels. The popularity of Pordoi Pass is also due to the highest cableway in the whol Trentino: the cableway of Sass Pordoi, crowded mainly in summer (in winter, if your name is not Tony Valeruz you can only have a sunbath at the top of the Alpes!).
Fedaia Pass
2057mt
Fedaia Pass lies on the boundary between Trentino and Veneto and it takes place at the foot of he "Queen of Dolomites", the Marmolada. Here there is a long cableway (also very old) that goes up to Pian dei Fiacconi. On the shores of the homonymous artificial lake you can find some refuges-hotels (dolomia, Alla Seggiovia, Castiglioni, Cima Undici).
