Catarina Lanz represents a sort of heroine for all the ladin world, a sort of Giovanna d'Arco. She was born in Al Plan de Mareo, in Badia Valley, and at the age of 25 moved to Spinghes, next to Bressanone, to learn german. In the same year, 1797, the troups of Napoleon reached the eastern Alps, in the zone of actual South Tirol. The population, in order to defend itsself from the french conqueror, called back a large number of Schützen from all the valleys, but it seemed that noone could stop the fury of Napoleon. At this point, duing the legendary battle of Spinghes, the 2nd April 1797, Catarina, armed with a pitchfork, climbed the walls of the fortress and reached the front line; she was able to terrify and to drove out the French from Spinghes. After this exploit, Catarina came back in her Ladina, helping her folk in defending from the conquerirs. Then the informations about Catarina Lanz are fragmentary; we find her at the age of 80 serving a priest in Andraz, in Livinallongo, where she was then buried with the military honours.
The ladin Mseum of S. Martin de Tor, in Badia Valley, has recently dedicated a part of the exposition to the heroine from Al Plan.
