FORCELLA DEL SASSOLUNGO

The Forcella Sassolungo (2681m), where the little Refuge Toni Demetz lies, is on the bpundary between Fassa Valley and Gardena Valley. Some years ago the old yellow cableway from Forcella SassolungoSella Pass (2244m) brought freeriders to the gully just in the middle of the Group of Sassolungo: the discent was possible both on the side of Sella Pass and on the side of Monte Pana and Selva di Val Gardena. Today this uphill lift is closed so that the discent is possible only after having climbed up the slope of the gully. The incline of the track to Sella Pass is not so steep, even if this tour is not recommanded for beginners. The track begins some meters befor the Refuge Demetz (closed in winter) and in the first part the slope is rather small, with the huge wall of Sassolungo (3181m) on the left and the Cinque Dita (2998m) on the right. As you go down the track becomes wider and wider and the incline softer and softer. As you arrive in the nearby of Sella Pass, the frack crosses the slopes Martinelli (coming from Col Rodella) and Cittą dei Sassi (coming from Gardena Valley). The Forcella Sassolungo fsces south, so that the snow is often in bad conditions in the second part of the winter season; it is always recommanded to read the avalanche report and to ask the alpins guides of Fassa Valley. IfIn case of lack of snow the rocks are the most important danger: in summer the gully is a wide scree with huge stones that could make the discent a little more difficult.  I
