Micurà de Rü

Micurà de Rü is one of the most important personalities in the field of ladin culture, particulary of ladin language. He was born in december 1789 in San Casciano, in Badia Valley, the last of four children. He attended the primary school in his valley but then he moved to Bressanone in order to attent the gymnasium. During his youth he travelled the wide Südtirol and Austria, untill in 1814 he became priest in Salzburg. He worked then as italian teacher, staying some years also in Milan, and died in 1847 in Wilten.

Micurà de Rü worked a lot to assert the identity of ladin language, tryng to realize the first ladin grammar, in german, named "Attempt of teaching german-ladin". His work wanted to code the written ladin language, unified in all the valleys: this was a sort of anticipation of that clumsy standardization attempt that nowadays is called "Ladin Dolomitan".

The Cultural Ladin Institue of Badia Valley, in S. Martin de Tor, maybe the most important in the Ladinia,  was dedicated to the figure of Micurà de Rü.
