The music

Music is a very important component of ladin culture, both in the tradition and in modern times. The songs have been rediscovered in the last years even as a way to promote the language, in each valley. Obviously, ladin songs belongs mainly to the field of folk music, but we can find also exceptions, sometimes also very amusing.

The mosto popular artists of the last years in the field of ladin music are surely "Die Ladiner" (www.dieladiner.com). It's a duo from Ortisei, in Gardena Valley, that became very popular thanks to their great succes in the last two editions of the 2Grand Prix der Volksmusik" (a sort of  german Music Award , very famous in the whole Ladinia). Almast all their songs are in german, but in the four albums they've recorded apper also three songs in Gardena Valley's Ladin ("Die Sprache der Ladiner", "La nëif ie tumèda" and the anthem of Gardena Valley "Gherdëina Gherdëina"), and one in italian. The themes these songs deal with are generally the beauty of the dolomites and local traditions.

Another popular artist is Belsy Demetz (www.belsy.it), a young girl of indian extraction adopted by a family of Selva di Val Gardena; she's got a wonderful voice. Her succes is linked with the "Grand Prix der Volksmusik" too, but I have to say that she deserves all her popularity. She sings mostly in german too (two albums already published): in 2004, cooperating with the project "Gramofon" of Radio Gherdëina she sang "Tu ies mi angiul custode " (You're my guardian angel), the ladin version of "I will always love you".

In Fassa Valley a very popular duo are the "Pazedins": this name comes from the nickname of the inhabitants of Canazei, from the ladin word "pazeida", the wood holder used to prepare the "Ciajoncìe". Their songs, all folk songs, are written in Fassa Valley's ladin, and deal with the tipical themes of this gender, such as natural beauties and brief anecdotes.

In the field of folk music there are a lot of less important groups in each valley, such as the "Golden Trio" and the "Musiconc Trio" in Fassa Valley and the "Familia Pradac" in Gardena Valley.

However, as I said before, ladin music is not only folk. A very interesting project in this field is the realization of the cd "Gramofon-Oldies per Ladin" promoted by Radio Gherdëina and the Union Generèla di Ladins dles Dolomites. It's a collection of the most succesfull songs of the last century sung in ladin (in all the dialects of the five valleys) by some local singers The most popular titles we can found: "I will always love you" (Tu ies mi angiul custode), "Va Pensiero" (Jide Pensieres), "Che sarà" (Cie saràl), "Goodbye my love Goodbye" (Joré con te y amé), "Cuando calienta el sol" (Canche l surëdl va ju), "Tornerò" (Vië inò), "Something Stupid" (Vèlch de morvöia). The artists that worked in this project have been Die Ladiner, Belsy, the Pazedins, Alexander dal Plan, Raimond Irsara, Reinhar Stuffer, Mark Alexander, Walter Diamant, Thomas Demetz, Robert Stuflesser e Pepi Huk.

Out of the field of folk music, recently have appeared groups of pop/rock music as the "Acajo" from Gardena Valley and the punk.rock-metal group from Fassa Valley "Dux melo sux", authors of the rock remake of the anthem of Fassa Valley "La cianzon de Fascia".
