Tita Piaz was born in October 1879 in Pera di Fassa and in few time became a very popular character in the field of alpinism, so that he was named "the devil of the dolomites". He was the father of the second generation of mountaneering in Fassa Valley and to him are acribed the 50 most imoprtant climbs in the Dolomites, such as the eastern edge of Winkler Tower in the group of Vajolet and the northern wall of Catinaccio. During the fascist dictatorship he passed some years in jail, due to his political ideas, but his fame did not vanished, so that he's still considered the greatest climber of history in Fassa Valley. He is very popular also abroad, thanks to the fact that he was the guide of a lot of turists at the beginning of 20th century, such as the King of Belgium Alberto I. Tita Piaz died the 8th October 1948, due to a banal bike accident, in the square of his village.
