Union Generèla di Ladins dles Dolomites

It's the most important istitution of the Ladinia (General Union of the Ladins of the Dolomites). The "generèla", as it's calles commonly by the ladins, was created in 1946 after the joining of the past unions, that is the Union di Ladins de Ghërdeina, the Union di Ladins de Fascia and the Union di Ladins de Badia. During the fisrst months of the life of this organisation, the pessimism dominated among the ladins, on the basis of the past ruinous attempts to create a solid and long living group. These bad moods were defeated and the Generèla was able to survive, permitting also to the ladins of Fodom and Ampezzo, that hadn't created unions yet, to take part to the meetings. The Union Ladins de Fodom was founded in 1968 and the Union dei Ladis de Ampezo was created in 1975; both then were included in the Generèla. The Union Generèla played a very important role in the history of the last century, always supporting the ladin culture and society: in 1954 helped the Union di Ladins de Ghërdeina in the buiding of the Cësa di Ladins (House of the Ladins) in Ortisei (nowadays this house is the center of a quarrel between the Ladins and the SVP (Südtiroler Volkspartei - Popular Party of Südtirol) of Bolzano about the finances for the renovation); another important action made by the Generèla was the battle fought in the Parliement in Rome in 1981, on the occasion of the referendum, in order to support the right of the ladins of Trentino, Südtirol and veneto to declare officially ther identity. The Generèla was then the organiser of the "interladin meetings", with the representatives of the ladins of Switzerland and Friuli. The Generèla cooperates with the Unions of each Valley and with groups of Ladins living out of Ladinia, such as the Comunanza Ladina a Bulsan (Ladins of Bolzano) and the Ladins Dlaforâ (Ladins of Merano).

Unfortunately, nowadays the Union Generèla, ruled by Hilda Pizzainini, must sorvive only thanks to the contributes of volunteers, because the money is not enaough. Plitically, the Union is supported only by the province of Bolzano (Trento is reluctant about it, while Belluno semms to ignore the problem); so the Union often has to obey to the diktat of the province and basicly of the SVP, the most importan political party in Sudtirol.

The consulta Ladina

The Consulta Ladina is an administrative body created by the co-operation between the Ladins of the province of Belluno, divided in the "Union Ladins da Fodom", the "Union dei Ladis de Ampezo" and the little "Union Ladins da Col" (Ladins of Colle S. Lucia-Livinallongo). Its aim is the one to make stronger the identity of these groups, improving the cultural union and creating relashionships with the other Ladins of the Dolomites. Each organisation and municipality of the Ladinia Veneta takes part to the consulta with a representative , for a total number of six members (three Unions and three municipalities). The meetings of the consulta take place by turns in the three towns of the area, and they deal with cultural, sociological or political subjects that could be interesting for ladin population.

The cultural institutes

Istitut Cultural Ladin "Majon di Fascegn": it's the cultural institute of Fassa Valley; it was founded in 1975 in VigoLadin Institutions di Fassa, near to the Museum Ladin de Fascia. Its most important aims are the gathering and the classification of documents about history, language and many other subjects of Fassa Valley's Ladins. The institute promotes the language organizing literacy campaigns, both for mothertongue and not, while in other matters the institute works in the publishing of the cultural magazine "Mondo Ladino", published since 1977. The institue mantains good relationships with other ladin organisations of the Dolomites and not, and also with other minorities in the whole Italy; it rules also the management of the Museum Ladin de Fascia.

Ladin InstitutionsIstitut Ladin Micurà de Rü: created in 1976 through a law of the province, it's the cultural institue of Badia Valle (in S. Martin de Tor-S. Martino in Badia), with branches also in Gardena Valley and Livinallongo. As the institute of Fassa Valley, its most important goals are the promotion and the conserving of ladin language, together with the relationships with other organisations. The activity of classification and registration of documents is very important, such as the menagement of the most important Museum of the whole Ladinia, the Museum Ladin of the Ciastel de Tor (Tor Castle).

The media

The ladin community is provided with proper media, in the field of television, radio and newspapers. About television, each day from 19.55 to 20.00 on the frecuences of Rai3 you can watch "Trail", a very brief newscast in ladin, presented by anchormen from Fassa Valley, Badia Valley and Gardena Valley and news coming from the same area (Fodom and Ampezzo are not included). Each thursday there's another 15-20 minutes broadcasting called "Paladina", always in ladin and dealing with cultural matters and current events.Ladin Institutions

In the radio field, the Rai Ladina of Bolzano broadcasts each day newscasts and short cultural programs, during around 15-20 minutes (for example "La copa dal Café" - The cup of coffee). Some private radios often broadcast programs in ladin, for example Radio Ghërdeina (www.radiogardena.it), the radio of Gardena Valley in german and ladin, and Radio Studio Record (100FM), the radio of Fassa Valley in italian and ladin.

In the field of publishing, the most important weekly newspaper is "La Usc di Ladins" (The voice of Ladins): it's a Ladin Institutionsnewspaper dealing with current events in the first pages, but then it concentrates on the facts from each one of the five ladin valleys. The newspaper, that survives only thanks to private contributions, subscriptions and advertising, is published by the Union Generèla di Ladins dles Dolomites; it was founded in 1949 with the name "Nos Ladins" (We Ladins) and then, after the fascist tripartition, it was able to resist till today, in spite of the many difficulties it had to face.
