----THE VALLEY----

The Fassa Valley, located in the center of the Dolomites in direction south-north, begins with the center of Moena(1184 m.) and stretches to north as far as the Fedaia Pass(2057.).

THE STREAMS

The Avisio River runs through the whole Valley from the Marmolada glacier, where it rises, and during his course, it receives the waters of many others streams (Rio Duron, Rio Antermont, Rio S. Nicolò aso.), flowing down from the side valleys.

THE MOUNTAIN CHAINS

The wonderful mountains which surround the Fassa Valley can be gathered into 6 mountain chains:

punto elenco The Latemar (2846m), in the south part of the Valley to the West of Moena
punto elenco The Monzoni and the Costabella (2759m) to the West of Vigo as far as the S.Pellegrino Pass
punto elenco The Catinaccio(3004m)that extends in the West part of the Valley from Vigo as far as Campitello
punto elenco The Marmolada (3342m), the "Queen of the Dolomites", in the East part of the Valley, near the Fedaia Pass
punto elenco The Sassolungo (3181m), in the North-East, that dominates Campitello.
punto elenco The Sella and the Pordoi (3152m) che that close the northern part of the Valley.

THE SIDE VALLEYS

Fassa Valley is crossed by a lot of side valleys. The S Pellegrino Valley, that begins in the center of Moena and, setting out for East, ends with the homonymous pass(1919m); this valley, delimited in the north by the Monzoni group and in the south by the Lusia and the Margherita Peak, goes uphill as far as the pass between woods and wide meadows. The Monzoni Valley begins in Pozza and stretches to south-east; it goes up the slopes around the homonymous mountain group and comes to an end at the Selle Pass, at an altitude of 2529m; in his central part, this valley is rich of pastures (mainly cows) that take up the green meadows of this area; the lower part of the valley, where flows the homonymous stream, is occupied by a wood caracterized by the elevated humidity rate. The S. Nicolò Valley leaves Monzoni Valley four kilometers beyond Pozza, and turn left. At the beginning this valley presents woods and wide meadows, but after a few kilometers, once past the waterfalls of the S. Nicolò stream, it begins to climb to the homonymous Pass (2340m). Always in Pozza begins another side valley, the Giumella valley, a very steep and narrow ravine that goes up the northern slope of the Buffaure Peak (2050m) and reaches the Sella Brunec (2428m). From the village of Pera di Fassa the Gardeccia Valley goes towards west; it is crossed by a carriage road and the lack of pastures is due to the poverty of meadows; the valley ends with the stately rock faces of the Rosengarten (Catinaccio, 3002m); here a lot of cols (Vaiolon, Mugoni, Coronelle, Principe) join the valley with the area of Bolzano. Udai Valley and Dona Valley wind to the steep slopes of the Catinaccio from the municipality of Mazzin, settin out for west; opposite to them, the rough Grepa Valley goes up the meadows untill the Ciampac hollow. From Campitello, setting out for west, lies the wonderful Duron Valley, that untill the 2150 meters of Duron Pass interchanges enchanting landscapes on the Marmolada, on the High fassa Valley but also on the meadows and the pastures of the same Duron Valley. Finally, in the north-easter part of Fassa Valley, setting out for south, winds the Contrin Valley,  that goes up a part of the western side of Gran Vernel (3210m), reaching San Nicolò Pass (2340m), Cirelle Pass (2683m) and Ombretta Pass (2740m).

THE CLIMATE

Fassa Valley shows a very diversified climatic situation. In winter, for example, the difference between the temperature of Canazei (in the northern part of the Valley and often in the shadows) and the one of Moena (in the south and in a sunny position) can go beyond ten degrees, even if the difference in height is only 200 meters. The winter average varies between 0°C and -10°C during the day and between -10°C and -20°C duringg the night. In summer it changes between 15°C and 25°C during the day and between 10°C and 15°C during the night. The snowfalls are assured, even if in the last years they gather in preise periods, such as february or march. In summer violent rainstorms can brake.
